In an extremely short, eight minute meeting, the Board of Supervisors approved the upcoming budget and tax rates. The Fiscal Year 2019/2020 budget, which was quickly reviewed by Dr. Neiman Young, County Administrator, did not garner any Public Comment nor any comments from the Supervisors. Having previously attended several budget work sessions already, the Supervisors also held a Public Hearing, advertised the basics of the budget, and heard a longer presentation from Dr. Young.
With the budget approved and no increases to real estate tax rates, the Supervisors then heard a report on the proposed solution for the concerns raised by the latest audit. The auditors noted that the school system did not have appropriate checks and balances in place to ensure fraud could be prevented. No fraud or embezzlement is believed to have taken place but the County still wanted to ensure it made things right by having County staff relinquish control of the Human Resources and Payroll work for the schools. In an effort to make this transition easier, the County will pay the schools $27,750 to fund a part time position through the end of Fiscal Year 2019/2020. The schools will in turn recruit and hire a part time employee to take on the work by June 1, 2019. Going forward, the schools will seek funding to pay for the position in their 2020/2021 budget cycle.
The Supervisors approved of the solution and adjourned their meeting.
