2020-03-06 - Census Press Release

by Chris Clarke, Director of Parks and Recreation

KG Counts!  Join Us in Completing the Census

Presidents have been counted here, now it’s your turn.  The United States Constitution in Article 1, Section 2 requires that all residents of our great nation be counted every ten years.  Starting in mid-March you will get your chance to join not only those Presidents, but also your neighbors in participating in the United States Census.  For the first time in our nation’s history you will be able to complete your census online or by phone so make sure you check your mail for an invitation with instructions on how to complete this short, ten question survey.  It should take you no more than ten minutes to complete and your answers are vital to our county, the state, and the country.  Here are a few of the things that census data is used for…

  • Division of seats in the House of Representatives
  • Virginia State Senate and Delegate districts
  • King George County election districts
  • The distribution of $675 Billion of federal aid to states and localities including health, education, housing, and infrastructure programs
  • Planning by private business and governments on roads, hospitals, schools, and other investments
  • Response by the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) in the case of a disaster

What questions will you have to answer?  They are simple ones, but they will never include your social security number, political affiliation, or credit card information.  Here are the questions…

  • How many people are living/staying at your address on April 1, 2020 (Census Day)?
  • Is your home owned or rented?
  • The name of each person in the home
  • The gender of each person in the home
  • The age and date of birth of each person in the home
  • The race of each person in the home
  • Whether or not each person is of Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish origin
  • Finally, the relationship of each person to the person completing the form

If you complete the census online or phone you are finished, if not, then a paper census form will arrive by mail closer to April 1.  If you return that form then you have completed your duty as well, but if you fail to complete the census by May then a census worker, called a canvasser, will stop by your home to assist you in completing the required questions.  All of your answers are completely confidential and cannot be released by the Census Bureau to anyone for 72 years.  The Census Bureau only reports out total information for areas (states, counties, etc.) and cannot just release your household data even if asked for by a court of law, legislature, or even the President.

If you have questions about the Census you can learn more by visiting 2020census.gov or you can contact the King George County Census Complete Count Committee at 540-775-4386 or crclarke@co.kinggeorge.state.va.us
